Church History

On this rock I will build my church. (Matt. 16-18) Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the holy has made you |l overseers. Be shepherds of the Church of God, which he brought with His own blood. (Acts 20:28)

In 1947 – The Church of the Living God was established in McGregor, Texas. The late Missionary Sister Emma B. Haynes was instrumental in getting the church established here in McGregor. Her hard work along with her faith and trust in the Lord allowed her vision of a church to prevail. The first meeting place for the church was in the home of Missionary Sister Emma and Brother Sammie Haynes.

The membership consisted of the family (Nathaniel Elder (Sister Haynes’ father), Roy Lee, Lendburgh, Harold and Gennie Mae Haynes). With persistence and perseverance the membership began to grow. The first pastor of the Church of the Living God in McGregor was Elder Stewart Elder, brother of Missionary Emma Haynes. At the request of Sister and Brother Haynes, Brother Elder moved from Karen, Texas to assist with the teaching and building of the church.

The first members of the Church of the Living God P.G.T. were Brother Joe and Sister Alberta Fulcher, Sister Brown (their daughter). Brother George Washington, Sister Lola Moore and Sister Lucille King. After Brother Elder left. Elder J.J. Jimmerson of Temple, Texas came to McGregor to pastor the church. During this period of time enough funds were raised, which allowed the church to rent its first building from Mr. John Johnson, located on Pullen Street. Church services were held there until enough funds were raised to purchase a lot.

As the membership continued to grow the necessary funds were raised allowing the church to purchase a lot from Mr. and Mrs. A.D. McLain. A small building was moved onto the lot and remodeled and thus was the pillar ground and truth.

The former Pastors for the Church of the Living God in McGregor were: Elder Stallion who followed Elder J.J. Jimmerson. Elder Albert Jenkins, Elder Jesse Williams, Elder Robert Mabrey,  Elder Kinsery and Elder Harold Haynes.   During the pastor ship of Elder Jesse Williams our present building was constructed. Presently Elder Sammie Haynes Sr. is the pastor of the Church of Living God.

The present membership gratefully thanks all of the former members who came before them, for their insight and belief. We thank God for the many blessings that he has bestowed upon us. We continue to pray for hi* blessing on this church for generations to come. In Jesus name, Amen
